Street Vendors and Illegal Parking at West Jakarta Morning Market Raided for Causing Traffic Jams, Traders Resigned
Joint task force personnel cracked down on street vendors (PKL) and illegal parking that occupied the roadside and pavements in the Pasar Pagi area, Tambora, West Jakarta, on Wednesday (29/4/2026).
Tambora Sub-District Head Pangestu Aji stated that the crackdown at Pasar Pagi was intended to restore the function of public facilities, which are often complained about by the public due to the chaotic layout of traders’ stalls and parking areas.
“The pavement is clearly for pedestrians. This road is already half used for parking space, and half for vehicles. Especially if traders occupy the pavement, how are buyers and other people supposed to pass through?” Pangestu said when confirmed by Kompas.com on Wednesday.
Pangestu mentioned that many traders place their goods on the main road, which damages the area’s aesthetics and causes traffic jams.
In particular, toy sellers to spectacle vendors often set up their stalls on the main road.
“This activity on this Handsome Wednesday is an accumulation of all orderly activities. Including pavement orderliness and PPKS, disaster prevention especially fires, channel orderliness, roads, waste and business premises orderliness, up to population administration and health orderliness,” said Pangestu.
According to him, this arrangement is not intended to hinder traders from earning a living.
However, this action is said to bring positive impacts to the economic wheels in the area.
A neat environment is believed to attract more visitors because road congestion can also be reduced.
Meanwhile, one of the Pasar Pagi traders, Nursin, admitted to being resigned and choosing to be cooperative with the crackdown carried out by the sub-district and joint task force personnel.
“Yes, as a trader, if it’s being cracked down, we just follow, as long as we’re not prohibited from trading, we just obey,” said Nursin.
Nursin also hopes that the market conditions in the future can still be used by traders to earn a living.
Although, she acknowledged that there are some trader blocks that are quite difficult to arrange due to market access issues.
“The hope is that traders are safe, can still trade. But for block A, it’s a bit troublesome for the traders, difficult. But here, we just obey, if told to close, we close, we move,” said Nursin.
The crackdown programme titled Tertib, Aman, Mandiri, Peduli, Asri, dan Nyaman is scheduled to sweep every village in Tambora in rotation every Wednesday.
“This is already the fourth day of the activity, already four villages. We don’t rotate one village all at once, but sweep each RW so that the education and enforcement directly reaches the community,” said Pangestu.
