Street vendor stabbed by thief

JAKARTA: A street vendor was seriously injured when an unidentified man stabbed him in the chest with a broken bottle.

The vendor, Ahmad, 60, caught the suspect red-handed as he attempted to break the lock of the vendor's cigarette stall on Jl. Raya Bekasi Km. 18, Rawa Terate subdistrict, Cakung district, East Jakarta.

The incident took place at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

"Ahmad warned the man not to steal from him, but the man retaliated and attacked Ahmad, stabbing him with the broken glass," Marulang, 43, another street vendor told a policeman at the Cakung police subprecinct.

The suspect managed to escape the scene when Ahmad fell to the ground due to the severity of the wound. He was taken to the Persahabatan hospital for medical treatment. -- JP
