Street vendor sites to be demolished

JAKARTA (JP): The East Jakarta mayoralty will demolish eight street vendor sites, to make way for the establishment of parks, as part of the local authority's effort to beautify the mayoralty.

Kusnoto, head of the mayoralty's economic affairs section, said over the weekend that an order for the demolition of the street vendors sites has been issued by Mayor Sudarsono.

Three of the eight street vendor sites are located in the Pulogadung district, two in the Duren Sawit district, two in Makasar and one in Jatinegara, he said.

The demolition will affect hundreds of vendors, who have made a living by selling food and other daily needs in the areas.

Kusnoto denied an allegation that the demolition plan was made to meet the mayoralty's ambition to get awards on sanitation from the governor.

"This plan is conducted in line with the mayoralty's plan to return the function of city properties to their original objectives," he added. (31)
