Street sweepers end strike

PEKANBARU, Riau: The streets here became cleaner on Friday after hundreds of street sweepers ended the week-long strike they called in response to rumors that some of them would be dismissed.

The yellow-uniformed sweepers were again seen working throughout the city, Antara news agency reported. The countless plastic bags filled with trash which residents hung on their fences while the workers were on strike disappeared on Friday.

The news agency reported the street sweepers returned to work after the head of the municipality's sanitation agency, Chairul, denied there were plans to dismiss the sweepers. (swe)
