Street Singer Along Senen Railway Hopes for Decent Housing from the Government

Jakarta (ANTARA) - A street singer living along the railway tracks in the Senen area, Central Jakarta, Wawan, expressed his hope of obtaining decent housing when President Prabowo Subianto directly inspected his settlement on Thursday (25/3). “Initially, there was coordination saying that the Governor was coming. But it turned out to be the President. I just watched from afar, didn’t get a chance to approach. Who is the first person in Indonesia? This is the first time someone has come here,” said Wawan, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s statement on Thursday. Wawan admitted to being touched by the visit because he did not expect the President of Indonesia to come directly to see the living conditions of residents along the railway tracks. He said that he has lived in the area since childhood, following in the footsteps of his family who have settled there for generations. “My activity is busking. Since I was little, from my great-grandmother’s stories, we have lived here. If you say it’s allowed, it’s actually not allowed. But we live here,” said Wawan. The unsuitable living conditions prompted Wawan to hope for government attention to provide better housing solutions for residents. “We ask for help with housing so that we can live decently. Thank you,” he said. President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to the railway track settlement became an opportunity for residents to directly convey their aspirations regarding basic needs, especially safe and decent housing. On that occasion, President Prabowo Subianto walked through the settlement area to observe the on-site conditions while listening to the aspirations of the community who have long lived in the area. Prabowo is determined to provide decent housing for every Indonesian citizen, including residents living along the railway tracks.
