Street Robberies Increasing Concern, Metro Jaya Regional Police Form 24-Hour Task Force

The surge in street robberies and violent thefts, which has gone viral on social media, has prompted swift action from the Metro Jaya Regional Police. The police have officially formed a ‘Robbery Hunter Team’ that will operate 24 hours a day to pursue street criminals within Jakarta and its surrounding areas.

This measure was taken as the public grew increasingly unsettled by the rise in criminal activity at several high-risk locations in the capital, particularly from late night to the early hours of the morning. Numerous videos of robberies and snatch-thefts circulating on social media have heightened fears among commuters.

Director of General Criminal Investigation of Metro Jaya Regional Police, Kombes Pol Iman Imanuddin, stated that the special team has already begun operations in various areas deemed prone to crime. Key focus areas for surveillance include the Bundaran HI, Patung Kuda, and Gandaria areas, as well as several routes frequently reported as sites for robberies and snatch-theft.

“We have prepared the Robbery Hunter Team, ready to act 24 hours a day to make Jakarta even safer,” said Kombes Pol Iman Imanuddin.

Shortly after its formation, the team launched operations and successfully apprehended eight suspects from several different groups suspected of involvement in violent thefts. According to the police, the perpetrators operated at various strategic points across the capital using diverse methods, ranging from snatching mobile phones to seizing vehicles.

Surprisingly, three of the arrested suspects were part of a gang specialising in mobile phone snatching. They admitted to committing crimes at approximately 120 different crime scenes.

Recently, robbery cases have become a major focus on social media. Numerous CCTV recordings and citizen-captured videos show increasingly daring perpetrators, who do not hesitate to use sharp weapons to intimidate victims. This situation has made the public more vigilant when driving at night, especially on deserted and poorly lit roads. Many netizens have expressed support for the Metro Jaya Regional Police’s decision to form this special task force, hoping that intensive patrols will reduce the rising rates of street crime.
