Street Lights in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, Out After Panel Components Stolen, Repair Target in 2 Days
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Several street lights (PJU) on Jalan Laksamana Malahayati in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, went out after unidentified individuals stole components from inside the PJU panel. The situation was captured in a video uploaded by the Instagram account @binamargajakartatimur. In the video, several components inside the panel are missing, causing the surrounding area to become dark as the lights do not turn on. “This is caused by the loss of components in the PJU panel box at Substation K 131 due to theft. It will be immediately followed up by officers for handling and restoration of the street lighting function,” reads the caption from the Instagram account binamargajakartatimur. The Head of the Infrastructure, Facilities, Utilities, and Street Lighting Section of the East Jakarta Road Infrastructure Sub-District Office, Yanuar Ikhsan, confirmed the incident. “The outage happened that night, and after inspection, it is likely the theft occurred the previous day. We do not yet know the perpetrator’s motive for the theft,” Yanuar said when contacted on Wednesday (6/5/2026). He explained that due to the theft, around 30 PJU points were affected and are not functioning. “Our target is to have them lit within two days, and we will report it to the nearest police station,” Yanuar said. In addition to repairs, he urged the public to help maintain street lighting facilities to prevent them from becoming targets of theft again. “Check it first because there has been no report yet,” explained Samsono.
