Streamlining Travel: Angkasa Pura Develops Face Recognition System to Replace Physical ID Cards

Airline passengers in Indonesia will soon experience a more practical and faster journey. PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (InJourney Airports) is currently refining a service system based on biometric and face recognition technology to replace the manual inspection of physical National Identity Cards (KTP).

his plan was revealed directly by the President Director of Angkasa Pura, Mohammad Rizal Pahlevi, during a working meeting with Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, 3 September 2026.

Rizal explained that this innovation is being implemented to alleviate queues and ease the passenger departure flow. “This is a process transformation; it is one way to provide simple services. We know that currently, ID cards are checked one by one. In the future, through biometrics and face recognition, there will no longer be a need to present an ID card,” he stated during the meeting.

With the implementation of this system, it is expected that inspection times will be reduced and the inconvenience often experienced by the public at airports due to physical document issues will be eliminated.

“Our goal for the future is that passengers no longer have to open their wallets to take out their ID cards, or take out paper notes—sometimes papers are left behind and subsequently rejected by the airport, making it seem as though we are unable to assist or serve them,” Rizal said.

He mentioned that the prototype of this system is already being tested for domestic flight services. The initial implementation is being carried out at major airports, such as Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang), as well as airports in Surabaya and Bali. The prototype system will subsequently be expanded in stages.

“Yes. The prototype is currently underway at Soekarno-Hatta. Eventually, we will prepare our strategic airports in a similar manner,” he concluded.
