Kodam XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol has revealed the results of its investigation into a stray bullet incident that injured two individuals in the Rectorate area of Padang State University (UNP) last week. The stray bullet was traced back to a shooting drill conducted by soldiers of the Yonif Yudha Putra (YTP) 897 battalion at Lapai Field during the same period.

“From the results of our investigation, the projectile that hit the victims is suspected to have originated from the shooting training activities carried out by soldiers at the Lapai Shooting Range,” stated the Head of Information for Kodam XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol, Colonel Kav Taufiq, during a press conference at the Kodam Headquarters on Monday (8/6/2026).

According to Taufiq, the weapon used in the training was a 9mm calibre pistol, with an effective projectile range of approximately 1,400 metres. Several factors were noted to have influenced the bullet’s trajectory.

“Several factors, such as wind direction, humidity, and the shooter’s position, were part of our investigation,” he said.

Taufiq emphasised that if any elements of negligence are found in the execution of the training, the responsible parties will be processed in accordance with the applicable regulations and rules within the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces).

“We are committed to providing full attention to the victims and will follow up on any form of negligence according to the applicable legal and military disciplinary procedures,” he added.

As a follow-up measure, Kodam XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol has decided to temporarily suspend all training activities at the Lapai Shooting Range. The TNI is currently seeking an alternative location deemed safer for future shooting exercises.
