Iran has introduced a new mechanism for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz, requiring permission from local authorities, according to a Press TV report on Tuesday (5/5/2026). Ships intending to pass through will receive an email from the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) containing transit rules before applying for official permission. Subsequently, ships must obtain PGSA approval to navigate the strategic route. Previously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that all movements of civilian and commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz must follow the designated route. The IRGC added that such movements must also be coordinated with the Iranian government.
