Strait of Hormuz Opened but Iran Could Close It Again, Here's Why
TEHERAN, KOMPAS.com - Iranian authorities have finally opened the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed this after the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire was signed.
“In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz is declared open,” he said, quoted from CNN, Friday (17/4/2026).
The commercial shipping route is open 100 percent for the next 10 days in accordance with the ceasefire period.
“A great and brilliant day for the world,” Trump explained, quoted from The Guardian, Friday (17/4/2026).
Trump also claimed that Iran agreed to suspend uranium enrichment without the US having to pay compensation costs.
However, the US Navy blockade in the Strait of Hormuz is still in place as a guarantee that transactions with Iran are 100 percent complete.
“The naval blockade will remain fully in effect and effective only for Iran, until our transactions with Iran are 100 percent complete. This process must proceed quickly,” Trump stated.
However, they could close that narrow waterway again in a short time if the situation on the ground requires it to be done.
Especially if the US blockade continues to be there.
It should be remembered that Iranian state television explained that commercial ships can indeed pass through the Strait of Hormuz, but the shipping routes are determined by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
