Strait of Hormuz Closed Again, Foreign Ministry Reveals Fate of Two Pertamina Ships

Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has explained the status of two Pertamina ships still detained in the Strait of Hormuz. The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran (KBRI Tehran), along with PT Pertamina International Shipping, is said to be continuously coordinating to facilitate the passage of Indonesian ships there.

“Regarding the above question, we can state that the government is continuously monitoring the developments in the region, including the Strait of Hormuz, through coordination with KBRI Tehran and relevant authorities,” said Kemlu Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl Achmad Mulachela to reporters on Sunday (19/4/2026).

Kemlu mentioned that there are still several technical aspects and operational mechanisms concerning these Pertamina ships. He stated that both aspects are being addressed by the Indonesian government.

“Kemlu, through KBRI Tehran along with PT Pertamina International Shipping, is also continuously coordinating to support the smooth passage of Indonesian ships. There are several technical aspects and field operational mechanisms that still need to be addressed,” he said.

Vahd also discussed the evacuation of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Iran. Vahd stated that Kemlu is ready to facilitate the evacuation considering the security situation and the needs of the WNI.

“Secondly, regarding the evacuation of WNI, KBRI Tehran is also continuously establishing intensive communication with the WNI in Iran to ensure their safety. Kemlu, through KBRI Tehran, is ready to facilitate the WNI evacuation process based on an assessment considering the security situation and the needs of the WNI in Iran,” he said.

Previously, Iran stated that the Strait of Hormuz would not be reopened until the United States lifts its naval blockade on Iranian ports. The Strait of Hormuz had previously been opened by Iran, but less than 24 hours later, the closure policy was reimposed.
