Strait of Hormuz Claims Victims: Remains Found on Cargo Ship

Human remains have been found on a Thai-flagged cargo ship that was previously attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. This information was provided by Thai authorities and the ship’s owner amid rising tensions in the Middle East region.

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the search team discovered the remains on the bulk carrier Mayuree Naree during a second sweep operation. The search was conducted under difficult conditions, including severe damage from fire and flooding in the engine room.

According to the Independent, the ship’s owner, Precious Shipping, confirmed that “human body remains were found in the affected area of the ship,” but stated that it could not yet determine the number of people or their identities, according to AFP as quoted on Sunday (5/4/2026).

This incident occurred during a period of heightened regional conflict. The US-Israel attack on Iran at the end of February was followed by retaliatory actions from Tehran, which effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, the main route for global oil shipments.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard stated in March that they had targeted the Mayuree Naree and a Liberian-flagged vessel because those ships ignored “warnings.”

It is known that the Mayuree Naree departed from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates and crossed the Strait of Hormuz without cargo when the incident occurred.

The UN Security Council postponed a planned vote on Friday regarding authorisation for the use of “defensive” force to protect shipping in those waters from further attacks.

Precious Shipping stated that the ship is insured against war risks and does not anticipate that the incident will have a significant financial impact or disrupt overall operations at this stage.
