"Stop the war immediately" was the common demand when hundreds
of thousands of people of various beliefs and groups took to the
streets on Sunday in the biggest protest in the world's most
populous Muslim nation since the U.S.-led war on Iraq began on
March 20,
Despite the massive turnout the rally was peaceful, in keeping
with its demand for peace in Iraq.
Although most Indonesians have little affinity for Saddam
Hussein, they sympathize with the Iraqi people, who have suffered
under a decade-long United Nations-enforced trade embargo and are
now falling victim to bombardments by the allied forces.
Some protesters wore enlarged photographs of Iraqi civilian
victims around their necks. One protester wore a monkey suit and
carried a sign that read, "Bush: war criminal", referring to U.S.
President George W. Bush.
More protests are likely to follow in the coming days, as the
people continue to do their best to pressure the countries
involved in the attack to stop the violence.
