Still on Alert! Anak Krakatau Erupts Again – Continuous Tremor Recorded Today
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has reported the latest developments on the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Lampung Province as of 8 September 2026. Based on visual observations, during the period of 7–8 September 2026 the volcano was clearly visible at times and obscured by haze at others. The weather was sunny to overcast, with weak to moderate winds blowing towards the north and northwest. “The air temperature was around 26–31°C. Visual and CCTV observations showed eruptions occurring, with the height of the eruption column not observed,” the Geological Agency explained in its report on Tuesday (8/9/2026).
Based on instrumental observations during the period of 7–8 September 2026, 2 eruption earthquakes, 4 blowing earthquakes, 76 low-frequency earthquakes, 100 hybrid/multiphase earthquakes, continuous tremor, 8 shallow volcanic earthquakes, and 9 deep volcanic earthquakes were recorded.
“The volcanic activity energy, as reflected by the average RSAM (Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement) value, increased on 5 September 2026 but decreased again on 6 September 2026. Tiltmeter data from the Tanjung and Lava93 stations show a tendency towards a flat pattern, indicating constancy, with no increase or decrease,” the Geological Agency stated.
Evaluation:
One continuous eruption episode that began on 4 September 2026 at 23.07 WIB ended on 6 September 2026 at 00.04 WIB, after lasting 25 hours.
“As of 8 September 2026, there have been 6 Strombolian eruptions since the continuous eruption episode ended. The return of Strombolian eruptions, characteristic of Mount Anak Krakatau’s typical activity, is for the time being interpreted as a sign that the rather long continuous eruption episode has ended,” the Geological Agency explained.
Nevertheless, the dynamics of Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanism continue to be monitored and evaluated. The probability of an eruption in the near future remains high.

Based on comprehensive analysis and evaluation up to 8 September 2026, the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Siaga/Alert), with the following recommendations:
- Restricted Zone
Local residents and visitors/tourists/climbers are not permitted to enter or carry out activities within a 3 km radius of the centre of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity. Vigilance against the hazards of pyroclastic clouds, lava, incandescent rock ejections, and heavy ashfall must be maintained.
- Prevention of Respiratory Disturbances
Residents affected by volcanic ash are advised to reduce outdoor activities or wear masks when active, to avoid respiratory problems.
- Do Not Believe Hoaxes
Residents in coastal areas of Banten and Lampung Provinces are asked to remain calm and not to believe hoax reports circulating.
