Still Hesitant About Data Science? Here are the Reasons Why This Major is Worth Choosing

Have you ever wondered why social media video recommendations feel so accurate, or how applications can predict which products you might want to buy? Behind all of this lies the role of data and the professionals who transform it into strategic decisions. This field is known as Data Science.

This field is becoming increasingly relevant in the digital era, where almost every human activity generates data, ranging from online shopping and social media usage to transportation services. This data is subsequently utilised by companies, hospitals, and governments to make more accurate decisions.

However, many students remain hesitant to choose a Data Science major because they believe they must be proficient in coding from the very beginning. In reality, this assumption is not entirely correct. Data Science is driven more by curiosity, critical thinking skills, and the desire to understand patterns and occurring phenomena.

Tati Mardiana, Head of the Data Science Study Programme at Nusa Mandiri University, emphasised that anyone has the opportunity to grow in this field.

“What is required is not being an expert from the start, but having curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a passion to develop. All competencies can be learned gradually,” she stated in a release received on Tuesday (19/5/2026).

In university, Data Science students will study various essential skills, such as programming, data analysis and visualisation, Big Data, and artificial intelligence. Everything is designed so that students are able to understand problems and present data-based solutions.

Interestingly, this field is open to various personalities. It is not only for those strong in logic, but also for those with communication skills, business understanding, and creativity in presenting information. The collaboration of these abilities is actually the main strength in the professional world.

Students do not only learn theory but are also involved in real projects, collaborations with professional partners, and relevant practical experiences,” she explained.

UNM also features the Internship Experience Program (IEP) 3+1, which consists of three years of on-campus learning and one year of direct off-campus experience through internships, industrial projects, or research. This approach ensures that students are work-ready even before graduation.
