Manokwari (ANTARA) — The Manokwari School of Legal Studies (STIH Manokwari) is expanding its collaboration with the West Papua Regional Police (Polda Papua Barat) to establish a policing studies centre as a platform for research and the alignment of science with field practice.

STIH Manokwari Chairman Dr Filep Wamafma said in Manokwari on Wednesday that the formation of the studies centre represents a strategic step to strengthen higher education's contribution in supporting policing duties.

"The draft cooperation agreement is currently being reviewed by each party. The target is to have it signed next week," Filep said.

According to him, the existence of the studies centre will not only have a positive impact on police personnel in handling legal issues in the region but will also foster creativity and innovation among STIH Manokwari students.

This is highly relevant to changes in higher education learning frameworks aimed at producing legal professionals who are competent, excellent, and competitive.

"Higher education institutions today must not only prioritise theory but must also understand field practice. The law is dynamic," he said.

Through the studies centre, academics from STIH Manokwari will be able to provide policy recommendations based on data and academic research that will improve the quality of policing services to the public.

The development of knowledge through the alignment of academic theory with field practice will strengthen the governance of the law enforcement system, making it more transparent, humane, and just.

"After the West Papua Police, we are taking the initiative to promote the establishment of a prosecution studies centre in cooperation with the West Papua High Prosecutor's Office," Filep said.

He expressed hope that all STIH Manokwari students would be able to utilise the studies centre as a legal laboratory to hone their academic and practical skills before entering the workforce.

The highly dynamic development of the law requires proficiency and agility in analysing every issue comprehensively, so as to produce solutions grounded in scientific study.

"We are also revising our curriculum to align with current conditions," Filep said.
