Jakarta (ANTARA) - Researchers are investigating factors contributing to higher dementia risk in women compared to men, according to a study published in the journal Biology of Sex Differences. Data from the US Health and Retirement Study, collected in 2008 from 17,182 participants aged 40 and above (nearly 60% female), was analysed. The team examined 13 modifiable health and lifestyle factors including depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, sleep disorders, hearing loss, and social isolation. Cognitive tests measuring memory and basic calculation skills were used to assess participants. Results showed women had higher prevalence of risk factors such as depression, physical inactivity, and sleep issues. Although men were more likely to experience hearing loss and diabetes, these conditions had a stronger negative impact on brain function in women. Cardiovascular and metabolic issues like high blood pressure and high BMI also had a more pronounced effect on women’s cognitive abilities. Researchers stated dementia risk cannot be addressed with a one-size-fits-all approach. They highlighted the importance of personalised health strategies based on gender and individual conditions to maintain brain health in aging. Three key steps for women to reduce cognitive decline risk were identified: early management of hearing loss through check-ups and hearing aids if advised; controlling diabetes via high-fibre diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep; and managing blood pressure with medical guidance, physical activity, and a diet that stabilises blood pressure.
