Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Commercial vehicles operating in areas affected by volcanic ash dispersal need to have their components inspected and cleaned to ensure everything continues to function properly.

Anjar Rosjadi, Business Solutions Director at PT Isuzu Astra Motor Indonesia (IAMI), outlined in a company press release received in Jakarta on Tuesday the steps that should be taken to handle vehicles exposed to volcanic ash.

The following measures are recommended for dealing with commercial vehicles exposed to volcanic ash.

  1. Check the engine air filter

Very fine volcanic ash particles can cause the air filter to become dirty more quickly and obstruct airflow to the engine.

Air filter inspection should be carried out after the vehicle has been operated in an area affected by volcanic ash dispersal.

“Dirty air carrying dust or volcanic ash needs to be anticipated, as it can increase the workload on the air filtration system,” said Anjar.

“A dirty air filter must be inspected and handled in accordance with the vehicle’s maintenance procedures,” he added.

Vehicles frequently used in environments with high levels of dust pollution are also advised to undergo periodic inspections.

  1. Check the pipes and hoses of the air intake leading to the engine

Ensure all pipe connections and ducting are properly installed and that there are no conditions that could disrupt airflow.

  1. Pay attention to the air intake system

The air intake system of vehicles equipped with a turbocharger should be inspected to ensure that contaminant particles are not interfering with the system that supports engine performance.

  1. Clean the vehicle’s windows properly

Volcanic ash adhering to a vehicle should not be wiped immediately or cleaned using wipers whilst dry, as the particles are abrasive and can cause scratches.

“Beyond the engine components, the cleanliness of the vehicle’s windows must not be neglected either, as it directly affects driver visibility,” said Anjar.

Cleaning windows exposed to volcanic ash should be done by first rinsing them with running water so that the ash is washed away.

Once the glass surface is free of ash particles, washing can be continued using soap and clean water.

  1. Carry out a more thorough inspection if necessary

A more thorough inspection is recommended for commercial vehicles operated intensively in areas affected by volcanic ash dispersal.

A more comprehensive check is needed to ensure that the air intake system and other components are in good condition before the vehicle is returned to service.
