Stepping on the Quran: Two Women from Lebak Become Suspects and Are Detained
Two women with the initials NR and MT are being held in custody at the Lebak Police Resort in Banten. They have been designated as suspects following their act of stepping on the Quran.
According to detikNews, the incident occurred when NR lost a makeup item she had ordered online. She then accused MT of stealing it. The two subsequently performed an oath using the Quran, which was recorded. However, the oath they conducted involved stepping on the holy book.
“They have already been designated as suspects. Yes, they were immediately detained,” said the Head of Public Relations at Lebak Police Resort, Iptu Moestafa Ibnu Syafir, on Saturday (11/4/2026).
Moestafa emphasised that the two suspects carried out the act consciously. They intentionally committed blasphemy against religion.
“The method of taking an oath on the Quran is not like that, and what aggravates it is that the holy Quran book should be held above the head for an oath, not under the feet,” he said.
“They clearly committed blasphemy intentionally. The motive is clear because they know the Quran is a holy book, unless they are not Muslim,” he added.
Suspect NR is charged under Article 301 or 300 or 305 in conjunction with Article 20 of Law No. 1 of 2023 in conjunction with Law No. 1 of 2026 on criminal adjustments. Meanwhile, MT is charged under Article 300 or 305 in conjunction with Article 20 of Law No. 1 of 2023, in conjunction with Law No. 1 of 2026 on criminal adjustments.
He expressed regret over the incident. Moestafa said that if there is suspicion of theft, it should be reported to the authorities. He also advised the public not to be provoked.
“Both the one who ordered and the one who was ordered are wrong; just pursue it through legal means,” he said.
“Lebak Police Resort has taken swift action in handling this case and has designated the suspects with the applicable articles,” he concluded.
