Jakarta — The local steel industry requires government support and protection from the Republic of Indonesia against the onslaught of imported Chinese steel and to enhance competitiveness in the global market, according to Handaja Susanto, President Director of PT Saranacentral Bajatama Tbk (BAJA).

Handaja Susanto emphasised the urgency of implementing trade safeguard measures and anti-dumping duties (BMAD) on imported steel products, including Chinese steel. These measures are necessary to ensure business continuity given that the industry employs a large workforce.

To enhance competitiveness, the steel industry continues to innovate. BAJA, for instance, not only produces aluminium-zinc coated steel (BjLAS) but has also expanded into coloured BjLAS products and industrial roofing and warehouse production.

The company’s expansion strategy and approach to building competitive advantage were discussed in an interview on CNBC Indonesia’s Manufacture Check programme.
