State Secretary Says Indonesia to Pursue Protein Self-Sufficiency

JAKARTA - State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has revealed that self-sufficiency in protein is the next target for Indonesia. He conveyed President Prabowo Subianto’s directives, which encourage protein self-sufficiency to bolster Indonesia’s food independence. “We must maintain and enhance our food self-sufficiency, as success has only been achieved in rice so far. We aim for success in other food commodities, including protein,” Prasetyo stated after listening to Prabowo’s briefing at the Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday evening (8/4/2026), quoted from Kompas TV’s YouTube broadcast. One focus for achieving this protein self-sufficiency target is to increase fish production. “Protein, one of which is fish-based, makes government priority programmes in the maritime and fisheries sector extremely important,” Prasetyo said. On that occasion, Prasetyo noted that Prabowo’s briefing served as a momentum for evaluation after one and a half years in office. “Because over these 1.5 years, many government programmes led by President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka have shown quite significant results. Of course, they have not yet resolved all the problems we face,” Prasetyo said. “He considers it important to provide a briefing, express thanks, as well as to motivate and explain that we must work together more diligently, faster, more productively, more efficiently, reduce leaks, and so on,” Prasetyo added.
