State Secretary Explains Transition Process for Bank Indonesia Governor
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi explained that the process of replacing Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo will begin immediately after the President receives his resignation letter.
“First, the President received the resignation of Mr Perry Warjiyo,” Prasetyo said at a press conference at the Bank Indonesia office in Jakarta on Monday.
Prasetyo said the acceptance of Perry’s resignation will be followed up administratively in accordance with the applicable mechanisms and laws and regulations.
According to him, the government will next issue a presidential decree (keppres) regarding Perry Warjiyo’s honourable dismissal from the post of BI Governor.
“Following that, administratively we will follow up today on the resignation letter, because in accordance with the mechanism, a presidential decree will be issued concerning his honourable dismissal from the post of Governor of Bank Indonesia,” he said.
After these administrative steps, the process of replacing the BI Governor will enter a transition period before the President nominates a new permanent BI Governor candidate.
Under the provisions of the Bank Indonesia Law, the President will propose the name of the new BI Governor candidate to the House of Representatives (DPR). Subsequently, Commission XI of the DPR will conduct a fit-and-proper test before granting official approval.
Once approved by the DPR, the candidate will then be appointed and inaugurated by the President as the permanent BI Governor.
Prasetyo said President Prabowo Subianto has not yet nominated a permanent successor to Perry Warjiyo because the resignation letter was only received on Sunday (26 July).
“Not yet, it was only yesterday. The President will not nominate a permanent candidate within just one day,” Prasetyo said.
He said the nomination of a permanent BI Governor candidate will subsequently be carried out by the President in accordance with the mechanism set out in the Bank Indonesia Law.
Meanwhile, Prasetyo said the communication process regarding the BI leadership transition period will also be discussed with the President, including with the official serving as interim governor.
“We plan to find time, if possible today, to discuss with the President,” he said.
Regarding the reason for Perry’s resignation, Prasetyo said it was submitted through a letter to the President citing personal reasons. The government, he said, respects that decision.
Prasetyo also affirmed that there was no pressure from the government behind Perry’s resignation. “None at all, none. His letter simply stated that he was submitting a request of resignation,” he said.
