State Secretary Calls Central Sulawesi Governor After M 6.7 Quake, Ensures Smooth Response
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has offered his condolences following the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that struck Central Sulawesi, which resulted in one fatality and dozens of injuries. “We ask permission to convey our deep sorrow over the earthquake in Palu yesterday, which caused one death and left several people currently receiving treatment,” Prasetyo told reporters at the Garuda Yaksa Pavilion in Hambalang, Bogor, on Wednesday (17/6/2026).
Prasetyo said he immediately telephoned Central Sulawesi Governor Anwar Hafid to ensure the response was handled as effectively as possible, including disseminating information so that the public remains alert to the risk of aftershocks. “Earlier this morning we also coordinated with various parties, and with the Governor of Central Sulawesi, to ensure that the entire response can be carried out optimally,” he stated. “This includes continuously providing information to the public so they do not let their guard down and remain vigilant in anticipating potential aftershocks.”
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) had earlier updated data on building damage and casualty numbers from the M 6.7 quake in Palu, Central Sulawesi. The BNPB recorded a total of 1,254 damaged houses and 76 injured residents. The data was based on a preliminary report compiled up to Wednesday (17/6/2026) at 04:00 Central Indonesia Time. The thousands of damaged homes and dozens of injured victims were spread across Palu, Sigi, Parigi Moutong, and Poso. The assessment confirmed the earthquake also claimed a life. “Currently, one fatality has been recorded in Sigi Regency,” said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, during a press conference broadcast via the BNPB’s YouTube channel on Wednesday (17/6).
Additionally, 1,834 families, or approximately 5,784 individuals, were recorded as affected by the earthquake. Muhari explained that affected residents are those who felt or were exposed to the quake. “There are 73 people with minor injuries and 3 with serious injuries. The serious injuries are related to bone fractures or wounds caused by collapsing building structures,” Abdul Muhari said.
