State prosecutors to return Amrozi's file to police

Agencies, Jakarta

Head of the Bali prosecutor's office I Ketut Yona said on Monday
that he would return the case file on key Bali bombing suspect
Amrozi to the police so that they could add further details to
it.

"The file, which was submitted to us on Jan. 6, is currently
being studied. But we can already see that there are matters that
still need to be added to by the police," he said.

Yona declined to say what police needed to do or when the file
would be returned, but he said the three-volume, 1,623-page file
would be returned by Jan. 19 at the latest.

"We have already coordinated this with the police and they are
beginning to work on completing the file," he told AFP.

On Friday, State Intelligence Agency (BIN) spokesman Muchyar
Yara said that Amrozi's dossier should be returned to the police
as it mentioned ammonium nitrate, which he said was not found at
the blast site.

Police say Amrozi has admitted to buying a van and chemicals,
including ammonium nitrate, to help make the bomb, and then
transporting them to Bali.

Police have said they want to put the suspects on trial as
early as next month. They could face the death penalty if charged
under the new antiterrorist regulation passed in the wake of the
bombings that killed more than 190 people on Oct. 12.

Prosecutors have said they have 14 days to study the file.
Under the law, if prosecutors are satisfied with the evidential
file, they prepare charges which are then brought before the
court.

Amrozi was the first suspect arrested after a car bomb ripped
through the Kuta tourist strip in Bali. The bombings badly hit
the island's tourism-dependent economy.

Fifteen people have been arrested for the bomb attacks, while
11 more, among them two Malaysians, are still being sought.

Key suspects in custody are Amrozi's elder brother Mukhlas,
the alleged controller of the Bali attacks, and Imam Samudra,
whom police say was the field coordinator.

They allege Mukhlas is the operations chief of the Jamaah
Islamiyah regional terror network, which has been linked to the
Bali blasts.

Sr. Comr. Zaenuri Lubis, a spokesman for the joint inquiry
team, said the police would present the file on Samudra, the
alleged mastermind behind the attacks, to prosecutors on Friday.

They had earlier said Samudra's file would be submitted to
prosecutors on Wednesday.

"The investigations (into Samudra) have been completed,
including inserting data from his laptop into the file," Zaenuri
was quoted by Antara as saying.
