State Palace on Maximum Retirement Age for Police: We Tailor It to Our Needs

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has stated that the extension of the mandatory retirement age for four-star high-ranking officers, specifically the Chief of the Indonesian National Police, is tailored to the country’s requirements. He noted that this outcome followed joint discussions between the government and the House of Representatives. Commission III of the DPR RI and the government have agreed that the retirement age for four-star high-ranking officers is 60, which can be extended by one year or according to needs as determined by a presidential decree.

‘We are indeed tailoring it to our needs,’ Prasetyo remarked at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. Through various adjustments in the Police Bill, he expressed the hope that law enforcement officers would perform better, become more formidable, and evolve into a police force beloved by all Indonesian people.

Previously, Commission III of the DPR RI and the government agreed that the draft bill amending Law Number 2 of 2002 on the National Police stipulates that the retirement age for four-star high-ranking officers can be extended by the president. This provision was settled during a working meeting at the DPR building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej explained that the agreed wording for Article 30 paragraph (5) letter c now reads: ‘Specifically for four-star high-ranking officers, the maximum retirement age is 60 years and can be extended by one year or according to needs as determined by a presidential decree’. He clarified that the phrase ‘or according to needs as determined by a presidential decree’ was a revision finalised during a drafting and synchronisation team meeting on the evening of Monday, 8 June 2026.
