A startup has announced something previously confined to science fiction: it created a virus using artificial intelligence and injected it into a human patient to treat a bacterial infection.

The move has prompted debate among scientists around the world, Futurism reported on Monday (26 October 2026).

The company, Radical Numerics, explained that the virus was not designed to spread disease, but to do the opposite: eliminate bacteria attacking the body. The approach is known as phage therapy.

Phage therapy uses viruses that naturally attack bacteria to combat infections resistant to antibiotics. What makes this case different is how the virus was created. Finding a suitable virus can normally take months or even years. This time, AI was used to design one directly, making the process much faster and targeting it at a specific infection.

The announcement has nevertheless sparked debate. The findings were not published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, but posted only on the company’s own website. The company has also declined to provide details about the patient or the doctor who treated them, citing confidentiality and the commercial value of the discovery.

“If this really works, it’s extraordinary. But my instinct is still sceptical,” said Michael Baym, a microbiologist at Harvard University. He stressed that a claim of this magnitude requires transparent, verifiable peer review and results that other research teams can reproduce.

If proven effective and safe, the technology could transform medicine. It could provide a way to fight thousands of bacterial strains that have become resistant to antibiotics. But without strict oversight, the ability to design viruses artificially also carries unpredictable risks.

This technology could save millions of lives while creating something unprecedented. The most important question is not simply what can be created, but how it is safeguarded, scrutinised and held accountable.
