Starting Today, X/Twitter Imposes Age Limit on Users in Indonesia: Accounts Under 16 Can Be Blocked
Starting today, Thursday (27/3/2026), the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has officially implemented a minimum age limit of 16 for users in Indonesia. This policy follows the government’s regulation requiring digital platforms to restrict access for underage children, as stipulated in Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP Tunas). The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) states that the step taken by X is one of the concrete forms of compliance by global platforms with applicable national regulations in Indonesia. In its implementation, X will begin identifying user accounts in Indonesia. Accounts that do not meet the minimum age requirement have the potential to be deactivated gradually. KompasTekno’s monitoring up to the publication of this news shows no user complaints about suspended X accounts yet. Nevertheless, Kemkomdigi emphasises that it will continue to monitor the implementation of this policy periodically to ensure all processes run in accordance with the applicable provisions. Not only X, but the government is also asking other digital platforms to promptly adjust their policies. All electronic system operators (PSE) that have received official notifications are expected to respond quickly and ensure compliance with the regulation. According to Kemkomdigi, the swift action from digital platforms is key to creating a safer internet ecosystem for children in Indonesia. The government is awaiting similar commitments from other platforms in the near future.
