PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has begun taking bookings for 67,120 long-distance commercial economy class train seats with a 17% discount today, Friday (14/8). The promotional tickets are valid specifically for departures on 17 August 2026, complementing a special Rp8 fare that will apply to the LRT Jabodebek and several Commuter Line services on Independence Day.

The programme carries the spirit of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, themed ‘A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia’. Through more affordable fares, public travel is expected to become more accessible for various activities, from returning to hometowns, meeting family, and holidaying, to visiting centres of economic activity and public spaces in various regions.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that prosperity is closely linked to the public’s ability to reach various opportunities. Public transport plays a role in making distances between regions easier to traverse and public activities more efficient.

‘Prosperity begins with accessible opportunities. When people can travel more easily, they can more easily meet family, work, trade, holiday, and access various opportunities. In this Independence Day momentum, we want train journeys to help open up more of those opportunities,’ said Bobby.

According to Bobby, the figures 17% and Rp8 were chosen to bring the identity of Independence directly into the public’s journey. The promotion also provides space for more people to enjoy public transport on 17 August.

KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the public can hunt for the 17% discount tickets for commercial economy trains starting today, 14 August 2026, at 00:01 WIB via Access by KAI and the kai.id website. The purchase period runs until 17 August 2026 at 23:59 WIB, as long as the ticket allocation and promotional fare are still available.

‘Starting today, 67,120 seats with a 17% discount can be booked. So if you already have travel plans for 17 August, now is the time to check schedules and choose your journey. The earlier you plan, the greater the choice of trains and schedules that can be tailored to your needs,’ said Anne.

The 17% discount applies to long-distance commercial economy class trains in Java and Sumatra with a specific departure date of 17 August 2026, from 00:01 to 24:00 WIB. The promotional fare cannot be combined with other reductions or discounts, while cancellations and schedule changes can still be made according to applicable regulations.

The festive Independence Day fare also extends to urban travel. On 17 August 2026, the public can enjoy an Rp8 fare for LRT Jabodebek, Commuter Line Jabodetabek, Local Trains in Area I Jakarta, Area II Bandung, Area VI Yogyakarta, and Area VIII Surabaya. This fare excludes the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line.

Anne stated that the coverage of the promotion, from intercity to agglomeration travel, means the benefits of the Independence Day fare can be felt by people with diverse travel needs.

‘Some take the train to go home and meet family, some head to work, trade, holiday, or celebrate 17 August in public spaces. This kind of mobility brings life to many cities. We want the spirit of a Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia to be felt closely through the public’s daily journeys,’ she concluded.

KAI encourages the public to plan their journeys early and to recheck schedules and promotional terms before making transactions. Travel information and discount programmes can be obtained through Access by KAI, the kai.id website, and the KAI 121 Contact Center.
