Starting from Tuban, Pertamina Assists Underprivileged Communities with Affordable Markets
PT Pertamina (Persero) has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting community welfare by organising affordable markets for underprivileged residents across various regions in Indonesia. The programme commenced in Tuban Regency, East Java, on 11 April 2026, and will be rolled out gradually in several operational areas of Pertamina. Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, Muhammad Baron, stated that the affordable markets target underprivileged communities in deciles 1-4 based on the National Social and Economic Single Data (DTSEN). The initiative aims to ease the economic burden on families while providing a practical solution for underprivileged households amid fluctuations in the prices of basic necessities. “In the midst of global dynamics, Pertamina hopes this affordable market programme will help underprivileged communities meet their basic needs,” Baron said in a statement quoted on Sunday (12/4/2026). The inaugural event in Tuban targeted residents from four villages near the company’s operational areas, namely Remen Village, Tasikharjo Village, Purworejo Village, and Mentoso Village, selected based on criteria for underprivileged communities by the Tuban Regency Regional Government (Pemda). As part of its Social and Environmental Responsibility Programme (TJSL), Pertamina ensures the initiative is sustainable and delivers direct benefits to the community. Each beneficiary family receives a staple food package consisting of 5 kg of rice, 2 litres of cooking oil, 2 kg of sugar, one can of sweetened condensed milk, one bottle of sweet soy sauce, and one can of sardines. This package, normally priced at Rp 211,000, is redeemed for only Rp 30,000. “The proceeds from the sale of these staple food packages are fully channelled back to support development and operational needs of places of worship, village infrastructure, and orphanages in the implementation areas,” Baron explained. Pertamina also ensures equitable distribution through its Downstream Subholding, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, with support from local governments and various stakeholders, including social institutions, religious organisations, and foundations. “The determination of beneficiaries is carried out by the local government to ensure the programme is on target and truly reaches those in need,” Baron concluded. Pertamina’s Affordable Market programme is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to deliver beneficial energy for community welfare throughout Indonesia. As a leader in the energy transition sector, Pertamina is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission target by 2060 and continues to promote programmes that directly impact the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these efforts align with Pertamina’s transformation oriented towards governance, public service, business sustainability, and the environment, by applying Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across all business lines and operations.
