Starmer Deemed to Have Lost Support, Resigns as Labour Party Leader

Moscow (ANTARA) - A member of the UK Parliament’s upper house from the Conservative Party, Richard Balfe, has said Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ‘run out of friends’ and is incapable of handling domestic issues. ‘Prime Minister Starmer has run out of friends. He is quite good at foreign affairs, but completely incapable of handling domestic issues,’ Balfe told RIA Novosti. Balfe added that Starmer, a human rights lawyer who later entered politics, is considered to have failed in most of the domestic policies he has handled. Earlier the same day, Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the currently ruling Labour Party. He said his party would begin the process of selecting a new leader on 9 July and complete it before Parliament reconvenes in September. Starmer also stated he would remain as party leader until his successor is elected. Around 100 Labour MPs had previously called for Starmer’s resignation in May after the party suffered a failure in local elections. The number of MPs urging him to step down reportedly continued to grow after his political rival, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, won a parliamentary seat last week.
