Starlink Phone Facts: Elon Musk's Explanation
Jakarta, VIVA — Speculation about SpaceX potentially releasing a smartphone directly connected to its Starlink satellite internet service has been generating considerable discussion recently.
The speculation suggested that Elon Musk’s company was preparing a communications device capable of competing with smartphones already on the market, as reported by Euronews on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.
The rumours emerged following reports citing plans to build a data centre in space. In those reports, anonymous sources claimed that a device dubbed the “Starlink Phone” had long been on the company’s agenda.
However, no specific details regarding specifications, design, or launch schedule were disclosed to the public. The speculation was promptly dismissed. Elon Musk openly stated that his company is not currently developing a smartphone.
Through his personal account on the X platform, he responded to a post discussing the reports and affirmed that a smartphone project is not part of SpaceX’s current focus.
Nevertheless, Musk had previously made statements that left open a different possibility. He suggested that if SpaceX were ever to produce a smartphone, the device would need to offer an entirely new approach — not merely adding another product to the smartphone market.
He even alluded to the concept of a device specifically designed to run neural networks with maximum power efficiency. This means the statement was more of a theoretical vision than confirmation of an active project.
As is well known, SpaceX currently has various technology development lines, particularly following its collaboration with artificial intelligence company xAI. However, to date there has been no official indication that the company will enter the smartphone business in the near future.
