Starlink Bills Swell to Rp 27 Million, Customers Feel 'Robbed'
Starlink customer bills have swelled by up to US$1,500 (Rp 27 million) as the Elon Musk-owned satellite service faces mounting pressure. The additional tariff is described as a ‘congestion charge’ because the customer’s address falls within a high-demand area. The surcharges range from US$750 to US$1,500 (Rp 13.4 million to Rp 27 million).
‘Starlink is too congested to handle the load at scale, quietly slapping customers with US$750 to US$1,500 surcharges,’ stated a report by Karl Bode from TechDirt, cited by Futurism on Monday (6/7/2026).
Several users have voiced their anger over the additional fees. One customer posted on Reddit that they received a US$1,500 surcharge after verifying an address registered three years ago. ‘I have contacted Starlink customer service, but it was useless. I was passed from agent to agent over the last five days,’ they explained.
Other customers have labelled the policy as robbery. They also reported that a Starlink agent acknowledged the issue as an internal system error but offered no solution. ‘But he couldn’t cancel it because the amount was large and said he would escalate the case, but in his last message he said he couldn’t resolve it,’ a customer recounted.
A US$500 (Rp 9 million) surcharge was also received by a user travelling with an RV, who found themselves in a high-demand surcharge area. The user attempted to appeal and threatened to cancel the service if the issue was not resolved, but Starlink rejected the request.
Some other customers received refunds after a coordinate error was detected in their location, while others ultimately had to pay the higher fees to continue using Starlink.
No similar complaints have been reported in Indonesia. On the official Starlink Indonesia website, the standard subscription services remain available, including the ‘Residential Lite’ package priced at Rp 510,000 per month with speeds up to 200 Mbps, and the ‘Residential’ package with speeds up to 350 Mbps priced at Rp 800,000 per month.
