Starlink Access Suddenly Restricted Without Warning: What Happened?

Several Ukrainian officials have reported that SpaceX unilaterally restricted Starlink services in the country without prior warning. The restrictions directly affected the effectiveness of Ukrainian combat-drone attacks on Russian military positions.

“Our defence forces received no warning about these restrictions, which disrupted a number of missions,” presidential adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov said in a Telegram post, Reuters reported on Thursday (15 October 2026).

One affected military operation involved drones flying at speeds above 160km/h. The drones reportedly remained airborne but became extremely difficult to control.

“From what we have observed, the connection drops for 10–20 seconds during flight, even at speeds of 110–120km/h. The drone continues moving, but becomes very difficult to control,” a representative of the 7th Rapid Response Corps said.

The military unit added that technical problems had forced the cancellation of several missions. No official reason has yet been given for the Starlink restrictions.

Starlink was first activated in Ukraine in 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion began. Since then, the satellite-based internet service has become a backbone of battlefield communications for Ukrainian forces.

Starlink is considered vital because of its resilience to electronic signal jamming, particularly for operating long-range attack drones and large hexacopters.

In 2023, SpaceX also refused to activate the Starlink network in the port city of Sevastopol, which was being considered as a launch point for an attack on the Russian fleet.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk said the refusal was because he did not want the company or himself to become directly involved in an escalation of the war between the two countries.

“The objective was clearly to sink a large part of the Russian fleet at anchor. If the request had been approved, SpaceX would have been explicitly involved in a major act of war and an escalation of the conflict,” Musk wrote on his X account at the time.
