Ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447H celebrations, prices of several staple foods have risen at Gedhe Klaten market. Meanwhile, visitors to this modern traditional marketplace have shown an increasing trend over the past three days.

As of Tuesday 17 March, basic daily necessities have seen significant price surges, particularly in red chillies, eggs, chicken meat, bulk cooking oil, and local medium and premium grade rice.

Red chilli prices have reached Rp110,000 per kilogramme, up from the previous Rp85,000 per kilogramme. Similarly, chicken eggs have increased from Rp27,500 to Rp30,000 per kilogramme. Chicken meat has risen from Rp36,000 to Rp40,000 per kilogramme, whilst bulk cooking oil has climbed from Rp17,500 to Rp21,000 per litre.

One trader, Triyanti, noted that local rice prices have also increased ahead of Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Grade C4 rice currently costs between Rp14,000 and Rp14,500 per kilogramme, whilst Mentik rice costs Rp17,500 per kilogramme. Medium and premium grade local rice has risen, whilst SPHP rice remains stable at Rp12,500 per kilogramme or Rp62,500 for a five-kilogramme pack, in line with regulated maximum retail prices.

Onion prices at Gedhe Klaten market have risen by Rp2,000 to Rp45,000 per kilogramme ahead of Eid, whilst garlic prices have increased by Rp1,000 to Rp34,000 per kilogramme. Bulk granulated sugar currently costs Rp18,000 and packaged sugar costs Rp19,000 per kilogramme, each rising Rp500 per kilogramme. Cooking oil prices conform to the regulated price of Rp15,700 per litre, according to trader Tina.

Beef prices are also rising as Eid al-Fitr 2026 approaches. Beef from Klaten slaughterhouses currently sells at Rp140,000 per kilogramme. The Central Board of the Indonesian Traders Association projects that the peak of staple food price increases will occur closer to Eid al-Fitr this year.

Red chillies have reached Rp100,000 per kilogramme, up from the previous Rp60,000 per kilogramme, representing approximately a 25 per cent increase. Beef remains a highly sought commodity, selling at Rp100,000 per kilogramme, considerably cheaper than market prices. Onions and garlic have recorded increases ranging from 5 to 10 per cent, whilst red and large chilli prices have also risen. As Eid al-Fitr approaches, various staple food prices at traditional markets in Makassar city have begun to increase.
