Stage rallies
Stage rallies
without anarchy
From Koran Tempo
The government's decision to simultaneously hike the fuel and
utility prices has met with a strong reaction, not only from
politicians but also from students, non-governmental
organizations, workers, businesspeople and public transportation
drivers, all demanding that the government revoke its decision.
Students have staged street rallies to express their opinions.
Our country's Law No. 9/1998 on demonstrations, states that
holding street rallies is lawful here.
I fully support the demonstrations, however, from what I have
observed so far, protesters have gone a bit too far and tend to
be anarchic during most of them.
In some rallies, the students and protesters held fuel trucks
hostage and burned used tires on the streets. These actions
certainly disrupt the traffic, harm businesses and eventually
make us all unsympathetic toward their cause.
Based on the above considerations, security officers must take
strong action against demonstrators who do not go by the book.
All people are equal before the law.
