Staff salaries robbed from school

JAKARTA (JP): Two employees of a state senior high school reported that they had been robbed by two men on a motorcycle who were armed with a one metre long samurai sword.

The robbers stopped the Kijang van in which Erwin, 35, and Sumidi, 34, were traveling, threatened them with the traditional Japanese weapon, then grabbed a bag containing Rp 34 million, Central Jakarta Police were told yesterday.

According to the two employees of SMU 68 on Jl. Kramat Raya, they were on their way back to the school after withdrawing the money from a BNI branch office one kilometer away.

Erwin and Sumidi said they were entering the school yard when their car was stopped and they were threatened.

"He waved the sword around then grabbed the bag full of money. I was very shocked," Sumidi told the police.

Like many other students in the country, those who attend SMU 68 are currently on a one month school holiday.

Erwin said he believed the robbers had followed them back to the school from the bank.

The case is being investigated by Central Jakarta Police. (edt)
