Stablehand jailed for doping horses

SINGAPORE (DPA): A Singapore stablehand who took bribes from a
Malaysian to dope horses considered favorites in races was
sentenced to a year in jail and fined S$9,000 (US$5,200), the
published verdict said on Wednesday.

Mohamed Iruanda Kamaruddin, 27, was caught at the Kranji Turf
Club while injecting the animal in his last attempt to drug a
horse.

The Singapore court heard how Mohamed Iruanda received S$9,000
to dope four favorites in a deal with a "big-time Malaysian
bookie" known only as Ah Huat, The Straits Times said.

The dopings started in 1997 and slowed the horses down so they
did not win. Mohamed Iruanda was asked to once again inject a
horse for an additional S$10,000 (US$5,800) last December when
police caught him in the act at the gate.
