The Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, issued a firm response to the disruption of a worship service at the Christian Mission for Prosperity Church (GMS) in Panggungharjo, Sewon, Bantul, on Sunday (24 May). The Sultan emphasised the importance of societal awareness in accepting differences as an inevitable reality. “Differences are inevitable. That is how God created it,” he stated in Yogyakarta on Monday (25 May), urging all parties to avoid believing they are always right in a diverse society.

DIY’s Kesbangpol chief, Lilik Andi Aryanto, explained that local residents’ opposition stemmed from issues with building permits for the place of worship before official approval or change of use. A joint statement from local RT/RW leaders and residents regarding the activities was also cited.

DIY Police Public Relations Head, Kombes Pol. Ihsan, said mediation between the Front Jihad Islam (FJI) and GMS took place on Monday (25 May), resulting in three key points: the police would not tolerate intolerance or unilateral actions disrupting public order. “Police must protect all religious communities without exception,” Ihsan stressed.

Meanwhile, Jogja Police Watch (JPW) strongly condemned the disruption. JPW noted the incident adds to a long list of intimidation against places of worship in Indonesia, including in DIY, known as the ‘City of Tolerance’. “This case must prompt an evaluation of on-ground police performance. Preventative measures must be strengthened to prevent further disruptions of worshippers due to permit issues,” stated JPW’s official release.

The government, through Kesbangpol, urged the public, especially in Bantul Regency, to remain calm and not be provoked by divisive issues. All parties were asked to respect legal and administrative procedures in line with the SKB 2 Menteri regarding the establishment of places of worship.
