Sri Lanka develops national strategy for drone technology

Colombo (ANTARA) - The Sri Lankan Ministry of Science and Technology stated on Monday (7/9) that the country is currently drafting a national strategy to standardise, test, and commercialise drone technology, following its increasing use in the agricultural, industrial, and other sectors.

The Ministry reported that officials and experts have commenced discussions regarding the establishment of a coordinated framework for the development, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and commercial application of drones.

The proposed strategy will introduce national standards covering manufacturing, safety, and the deployment of drones in agriculture, industry, and environmental management.

Authorities will also identify laboratories for drone testing and quality control, while exploring opportunities for research, technological development, and commercialisation.

The Ministry noted that the government will collaborate with relevant agencies to address legal and policy obstacles that could hinder the development of the sector.

The framework will take into account regulations managed by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence, the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka.
