Srengseng City Forest in West Jakarta to Become Waste Sorting Pilot

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The West Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest Sub-agency (Sudin Tamhut) plans to redevelop Srengseng Urban Forest so that it can serve as a model site for waste sorting.

Head of Sudin Tamhut West Jakarta, Dirja Kusuma, said the plan emerged after West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah inspected Srengseng Urban Forest on Wednesday.

“The Mayor asked that the Srengseng Urban Forest area become a model for the waste-sorting movement and serve as an educational facility for the public. However, the Mayor also requested that the composting site be tidied up and better organised,” Dirja said when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In addition, he said, his office has been asked to build composting infiltration wells and involve local residents through the Srengseng Urban Forest Forest Farmer Group (KTH).

“The Mayor’s instruction is for the community to be involved through the KTH in planting citronella. The harvest can later be processed into refreshing drinks,” Dirja explained.

Beyond offering a cool oasis with thousands of trees, the site is also a favourite spot for residents to relax, as well as a destination for family educational tourism.

“I have been informed that the Deputy Governor of Jakarta will come here to see what attractions could be introduced at Srengseng Urban Forest, because the site has an amphitheatre, an open stage for Betawi community arts and cultural performances,” Dirja said.

As is known, Srengseng Urban Forest is located in Kalam H Kelik, RT 08/RW 08, Srengseng, Kembangan. The area is a green open space spanning 15.3 hectares, with a beautiful environment and fresh air thanks to more than 10,000 trees of 60 different species.

The forest’s managers provide jogging tracks as well as educational facilities on flora and fauna for children.

Information boards are placed at each tree and plant, allowing visitors to easily identify the types of flora found in Srengseng Urban Forest.
