SPPI Kopdes Merah Putih Death Toll Rises to Four After Another Participant Dies
One participant of the Sarjana Penggerak Pembangunan Indonesia (SPPI) Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih programme, Muhammad Rifki Renaldi Gunawan, has died while undergoing training at Yon Parako 465.
The Ministry of Defence, which is part of the National Selection Committee for the SPPI Kopdes and Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih, expressed its deepest condolences. According to the Head of the Defence Information Bureau, Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, Rifki passed away in the early hours of Friday.
Brigadier General Sirait explained that on 25 June, Rifki experienced health complaints including shortness of breath and immediately received initial treatment from the unit’s medical team. His condition initially improved, and he was even able to resume activities. However, his health deteriorated again in the afternoon, leading to his referral to RSAU dr. Esnawan Antariksa for further medical care. Despite receiving intensive treatment in the ICU, he was pronounced dead on 26 June at 00.28 WIB.
Prior to joining the programme, Rifki had undergone the required selection process, including a medical examination, and was declared fit to participate. The Ministry of Defence and the training organisers have provided assistance to the family, including the repatriation of the body and fulfilment of the participant’s entitlements.
In response to this incident, the Ministry and the National Selection Committee are conducting a thorough evaluation of the SPPI programme. Measures include strengthening the health selection process, early detection of medical conditions, increasing supervision by health personnel during training, tracing participants with similar complaints, and improving health handling procedures across all training units.
The SPPI programme is a government initiative aimed at developing human resources with character, integrity, and leadership to support national development through the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih and Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih. All participants join voluntarily through an established selection mechanism.
This case adds to the list of fatalities among programme participants. The Ministry of Defence previously confirmed the deaths of two participants on 23 June: Anisa Muyassaroh, who died from heat stroke during training in Balikpapan, and Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq, who died from cardiac arrest during training in Baturaja. A third participant, Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang, died the following day during training in Jakarta.
