Spotify Can Now Create AI Podcasts From Users’ Lives

Spotify has officially introduced a new desktop application called Studio. The app, developed by Spotify Labs’ artificial intelligence (AI) team, allows users to automatically generate AI-based podcasts from a variety of personal information sources. Studio acts as a direct competitor to Google NotebookLM, Google’s AI service popular for its ability to create virtual podcasts from documents and specific material.

Unlike ordinary Spotify, Studio is designed as a standalone application focused on an AI-powered personalised audio experience. The AI then blends those preferences with knowledge from the internet to produce audio content that is more personal.

Spotify says Studio can also connect to a range of services such as calendars, email, and even personal notes to help assemble a daily audio briefing. However, access to these data will still follow user permissions or consent.

Spotify also integrates an AI agent within Studio. This feature can browse the web, research topics, organise information, and help complete tasks the user is working on. For example, a user could command: “Create an audio briefing for a vacation plan,” including the daily agenda from the calendar, recommendations for nearby restaurants, and podcast suggestions to accompany the journey.

In addition to audio briefing creation, Studio is said to generate automatic playlists for long journeys, and produce short podcasts to learn about specific topics. Users can also adjust the audio tone, or steer the results toward another topic to stay relevant to current events.

Spotify explains that all AI-produced podcasts and audio processed within Studio will be stored directly in the user’s Spotify library, alongside the existing music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The content can also be accessed across devices, for example played through a home speaker, listened to while travelling, or used for a quick briefing in the evening.
