Spot-check at Meta's Office: Meutya Hafid Urges Transparency of Algorithms and Content Moderation
JAKARTA — The Indonesian Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid requested several measures during a spot-check at Meta’s office in the Sequis Tower Building, Senayan, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.
“We spoke today with Meta to request several things, firstly transparency of the algorithms, transparency of content moderation,” Meutya said after the spot-check.
In addition, Meta was asked to comply with reporting obligations in accordance with applicable rules.
“Among these, there were questions that could not yet be answered; we asked for enhanced oversight,” she said.
Therefore, adequate oversight is required to keep the digital space safe and protect the public.
However, to date there has not been a definitive explanation regarding the number of parties tasked with monitoring disinformation content.
Meutya explained that the disinformation most commonly found relates to health issues.
She said she has received numerous complaints from doctors and health professionals about misinformation with serious impacts, including the loss of lives among children and members of the public.
Reports related to these cases are among the most frequently received and harm various sections of society, particularly economically disadvantaged groups.
Another category is disinformation related to governance and development.
“This should not be interpreted as a government versus the people; rather, disinformation that sows discord pits people against one another,” she said.
“Polarisation that ends with hatred between one group in society and another,” she added.
“One of those we have seen, or the findings we have seen, is anti-vaccine misinformation, but that is only one example.”
“The core and undeniable issue is how society becomes polarised, with mutual hostility between groups and the erosion of social cohesion,” she added.
