Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir has strongly condemned the growing number of alleged victims of physical violence and sexual harassment at the National Training Centre (Pelatnas) for rock climbing, and assured that the state will oversee the handling of the case to completion.

“The safety, dignity, and future of athletes are the top priority. There is no place for sexual violence in Indonesian sports, including at Pelatnas,” stated Erick Thohir firmly in a press release from the Sports Ministry in Jakarta on Sunday.

The government, Thohir continued, applies the principle of zero tolerance towards all forms of harassment and violence in the sporting environment.

The Sports Minister assured that the state stands with reporting athletes by guaranteeing the confidentiality of their identities and providing full protection from all forms of pressure and intimidation. This protection also includes guarantees regarding the continuity of their careers in sport.

“We also encourage long-term legal and psychological support to be provided to safeguard the future of the victims,” said Erick.

He called upon all parties to jointly oversee this case and undertake comprehensive reforms to athlete protection governance to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in future.

“We must ensure that Indonesian sport is clean, safe, and upholds humanitarian values,” said the Sports Minister.
