Sports center changes function
Sports center changes function
From Kompas
One Sunday morning I visited Bung Karno sports stadium complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta to do some exercise. To my surprise, I found the situation in the area quite different from what it used to be.
Now, the stadium, in particular its outer ring, looks similar to Tanah Abang market. Many things are on sale despite the notice board saying "No trading". How can you go jogging if it is so difficult even to walk through the crowded space? I also saw a group of teenagers apparently selling drugs on the pretext of doing exercise.
The stadium used to be a welcoming place for families to do their exercise every Sunday morning. The air was clean and the trees were shady. It is said that Jakarta lacks an open space.
However, the management of Bung Karno sports stadium has instead let the stadium complex be turned into a busy market. It seems that the management has only thought about the income from retribution fees paid by vendors and has forgotten the stadium's real function.
I call on the authorities to relocate the vendors in such a way that the outer ring of the sports center can be used for doing healthy exercise.
