S'pore woman breaks barrier
SINGAPORE (AFP): Former Singapore hockey player Annabel Ess
became the first woman to break into the once male-only Singapore
National Olympic Council (SNOC) executive committee, the Straits
Times reported on Tuesday.
"It is like an athlete making it to the Olympic Games. Being
involved in the Olympic movement is for me the ultimate for any
sports administrator," the daily quoted the 51-year-old Ess as
saying.
Entering an all-men's club is not new for Ess, the daily said,
adding she was the only woman vice-president in the Singapore
Hockey Federation.
"I would like to lend the women's perspective to the SNOC
where appropriate, but more importantly, I would hope that with
my involvement more women would get involved with sports," she
said.
