S'pore urges ASEAN legal networking

SINGAPORE (DPA): Sending Singapore lawyers to work with their
counterparts in other Southeast Asian countries was proposed on
Tuesday to strengthen each nation's legal framework and help the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) succeed in the new
globalized economy.

"There is a tendency for investors to rate us as a region,"
Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs S. Jayakumar told the
faculty of law's anniversary dinner.

He called for initiatives enhancing understanding of other
legal systems and leading to "increased networking, mutual
understanding and knowledge pooling among the legal fraternity of
ASEAN countries".

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations groups
Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, the
Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam.
