S'pore urges ASEAN legal networking

SINGAPORE (DPA): Sending Singapore lawyers to work with their counterparts in other Southeast Asian countries was proposed on Tuesday to strengthen each nation's legal framework and help the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) succeed in the new globalized economy.

"There is a tendency for investors to rate us as a region," Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs S. Jayakumar told the faculty of law's anniversary dinner.

He called for initiatives enhancing understanding of other legal systems and leading to "increased networking, mutual understanding and knowledge pooling among the legal fraternity of ASEAN countries".

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations groups Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam.
