S'pore tries to reduce pirates
SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore's coast guard is working more
closely with its Malaysian and Indonesian counterparts to stem
pirate attacks, the Sunday Times reported.
Last year, there were three pirate attacks on vessels in the
Singapore Straits, parts of which fall under Indonesian or
Malaysian jurisdiction, the Police Coast Guard (PCG) told the
newspaper.
"Some attacks happened at the fringe of our waters, about
three to five nautical miles away," said Hsu Sin Yun, a PCG head
of operations and security.
Hsu also said the PCG now works more closely with the Royal
Malaysian Marine Police based in the southern state of Johor.
