SINGAPORE: Singapore will host a leg of the Formula One (F1) powerboat racing championship in October and negotiations are underway to have the city-state play host for the next four years, a report said.
The city-state last played host to the championships from 1986 to 1992 at Marina Bay but was unable to continue when reclamation work had to be carried out in the area.
"We are very excited to come back to Singapore. Our contract is for one year now, but we are in negotiations to extend it by another four years," said Giancarlo Tschuor, powerboat F1's vice president for marketing.
Singapore will host the ninth leg of the 11-leg championship, tentatively scheduled on October 25-26, off the waters of Sentosa island.
It cost the city-state about US$6 million to secure the rights to host a leg of the championships.--AFP
